elbow yanking on doubles
Picked up on something from watching a lot of really good/prolific dance game doubles players (FEFEMZ, Takaske for example).
They push on the two inner elbows of the bars, and leverage more of their lower body strength than their upper body strength when playing. Specifically, they "lock" their arms by grabbing the inner elbow on each bar, and push on the side the opposing elbow to assist with moving their center of mass unless they need to crouch to lock into a twisty run.
It's different in application on StepManiaX because of how the bars are wider, so the inner elbows are closer together. I have to do a bit of a hybrid grip where I shift one of my arms that is opposing the side I'm trying to push away from, but then that makes the muscle memory of pulling myself back different-- I literally have to yank the bar by the elbow I pushed away from with the same hand to bring myself back, since my other hand is no longer resting on the other bar's inner elbow.
I used to play with shelf liners on the bar for a little bit of extra grip. I found a durable vinyl tape (3M 471) that works well for adding a little bit of extra grip to the SMX bars without sacrificing the ability to wipe them down, I stopped using the shelf liners. Not having anything on the bars seems to really help with sudden yanks when going back in the opposite direction. I can't wear gloves due to eczema breakouts, unfortunately.
